Believed to have been built in the late 1960´s the bungalows were originally part of a bar and family restaurant attached to the west side of the bungalows. The facility became a "Central Nocturnal" sometime in the 1980´s, which is just a fancy name for a bar and house of prostitution. Some time during that decade the bungalows were no longer used for woman´services and were consequently, abandoned and fell into ruins and vandalism.. The bar continued and was mostly popular for live music.
We bought the bungalows in October of 1993 and had them legally seperated into two seperate properties. Our first official guests arrived in December of 1993 and still return to this day, 20 years later. We opened basically broke with only two bungalows suiteable for renting.
1994 brought on a 50% devaluation of the Mexican Pesos and the severe economic crisis in Mexico. Our short term morgage was in pesos and instantly doubled our monthly payments. A price freeze on most products and services was enacted and we thought we may just loose the property altogether.
It was looking as though Chris would have to return to the states and hope to earn enough money to send down for payments and expenses. Finally the previous owner helped by renegotiating our contract and turned our two year contract into a 6 year one. The economy eventually improved, I didnt have to go work in the states and were able to slowly maintain somewhat the place as well as make improvements.
In 1999 we turned one of the fron bungalows into San Blas's first internet cafe, San Blas en Linea" with the help of our "Mexican Mama" Carol. It featured three computers with internet about the speed of pouring molasses. We offered a great selection of used books for trade or sale, beverages and long distance and fax service. The bungalows were doing well at this point with with all bungalows open and in service. These were probably our golden years.....and we were finally able to pay off our mortgage.
Hurricane Kenna, a catagory 5 hurricane, changed everything 0n October 25th, 2002. With extensive damage and decreased tourism it was a labor of love and an uphill struggle to get the place back up and running again.
Ever since the hurricane tourism has not been the same here in San Blas. World wide conomic hardships, drug wars and flu scares have all contributed to tough times. Alma Rita went to work in Tepic to manage a new Curves Gym in 1994 and two years later started teaching english here in San Blas was has helped us tremondously to survive the off-season. Chris started repairing computers and doing wbsites and hosting since the closure of the Internet Cafe.
Today we enjoy the annual return of many guests during the winter months, most of who have been returning for well over a decade, making it difficult to find vacancy from mid December to Easter. This year, 2013 we have started offering hostel style lodging in hoping to improve our off-season occupancy and economy. If successful we will continue by eventually building a new dorm room as a year-round offering.
